Re: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 Doesn't work

Is it a 3rd gen model? If yes then see the manual to switch it to Class Compliant mode. aplay -l will list it. Since it has no software controllable mixer you can't and you don't need to use alsamixer. Turn the big volumne knob to the max and be sure that the smaller direct monitor knob isn't turned...

Re: Command line tool to find clipping audio files?

Thank you for the command. It would be nice to do it recursively, to check all files in one step. I can't test it at the moment but a shell file like this should work: #!/bin/bash find . | while read LINE do sox "$LINE" -n --norm -R gain 0.1 2>&1 | grep clipped && echo "$...

Re: Connecting a synth to my laptop ?

Thanks for all your help. Tascam is on it's way today. I've downloaded the manual for it & it does have a software mixer program. This should load when I plug it in or will i get Alsamixer ? Nat sure if it does anything i can't do with the knobs. I glimpsed over the Tascam website and saw that ...

Re: simple software for digital piano recording

I dunno 'bout the difference between PCM and floating PCM. But CD quality is 16 bit 44.1 kHZ PCM audio (= large file). If you compress/convert that to an 128 kbps MP3 audio (= small file), then tests have proven that most people cannot hear the difference between a CD and said MP3 file. My experien...

It depends on the interface. Some have features controlled by software, others are controlled only by the hardware dials and switches.

I use Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, and have never used alsamixer.

Because it doesn't have a software controllable hardware mixer :)

That should be fixable. Adjust the volume with alsamixer, then run "sudo alsactl store"

Re: Connecting a synth to my laptop ?

Thanks everyone for all the info & links. I was getting disheartened & wasting a lot time getting nowhere. One brief additional Q : Could I route through an additional MIDI keyboard instead of an audio interface ? As they cost about the same I'd get extra versatility . There are some USB MI...

Re: Connecting a synth to my laptop ?

You need to exchange 2 kinds of data: 1) MIDI data for note on/off. Both from the K-Station (recording MIDI clips in Ardour) and to the K-Station (play notes, controlled by Ardour) 2) Audio data (recording audio in Ardour) The K-Station doesn't seem to have an USB connector, so you need a combined a...

Re: Rainy Day

My son will be attending a percussion class, so we bought him the required bell kit. The day after buying it, I came home to find that he and my daughter had created this duet with the piano and the bell kit. They called it Rainy Day and asked me to record it. My younger son wanted in on the action...

Apologies for offtopic... Since so many desktop applications use Pulseaudio maybe you might rethink your "no Pulseaudio" descision, at least on the desktop PC. I've been using Linux for 13 years and never needed Pulseaudio  I am using Linux for 24 years, never liked Pulseaudio, but ...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen mixer driver

geoffrey, how confident are you that you could get a 3rd gen scarlett working in Linux with access to usb dumps? I recall you wrote something about that earlier but couldn't find the post so.. Since the 3rd gen Scarletts are shipped in Mass Storage Device mode (as their support informed me) it woul...
